Yamalube Cleaning Guide
Frequent cleaning of your machine will enhance its appearance, maintain better overall performance, extend the life of many components and help maintain the machine’s value. A bike that is used during the winter months will require extra care to ensure that the ravages of the British winter do not take their toll.
Before washing the bike always put on some protective gloves. Next, fit a plastic bag with a rubber band over the end of the exhaust (ensure the machine/exhaust is cool). Any excessive grease around the engine can be removed with a degreaser, Yamalube Pro-active Cleaning Gel is designed to be used on all components and its acid/alkaline free formula ensures that there is no risk of damage or staining. Simply spray on, wipe and rinse off. Avoid de-greasing the chain sprockets or wheel axles unless they are severely contaminated. Any degreaser used on the chain must be compatible with the chain “O” rings. We recommend Yamalube Premium Chain Cleaner Gel.
Rinse off the degreaser with a garden hose or bucket and sponge. A pressure washer may sound like a quick solution to cleaning but remember, parts are more open to the elements on a bike and water can easily be forced into components especially electrical connectors, which may cause problems at a later date. When using a hose, don’t direct the water at air intakes or electrical components. Avoid using acidic or caustic wheel cleaners.
Wash off the rest of the bike using a mild detergent, using a small soft bristle brush or old toothbrush to access difficult to reach areas. Again, avoid the use of a pressure washer and use a hose to thoroughly rinse the bike off. Dry the bike using a soft absorbent cloth or chamois leather.
Remove water from the chain with paper towel or an old clean rag and lubricate the chain to stop it from corroding. Yamalube Platinum Chain Spray is specifically formulated for the use on “O” ring type chains.
To protect the body work components apply a good quality non-abrasive polish. Be careful with windscreens and plastic headlamp covers to avoid scratching them. Yamalube Paint and Plastic Polish can be used to protect the body components and remove minor scratches.
For black components such as engine casings and plastic trim, use a trim polish such as Yamalube Prisma Silicone Spray to enhance their appearance. Do not apply to the seat, or tyres and avoid contact with the brake discs or pads.
Finally use a little water dispersant/maintenance spray such as Yamalube Power Shield Spray around any exposed electrical connections, nuts bolts and fasteners to protect them. Now remove the plastic bag and rubber band from the exhaust, start the bike and run the engine for a few minutes to ensure that any remaining water is dried off and everything functions correctly.
Even if you are laying up your bike for winter, it is important that the bike is thoroughly cleaned, the battery charged and the bike stored in a dry environment. Ideally a breathable cover should be used to minimise condensation and to keep the bike clean.
These guidelines may change depending upon individual circumstances. Your local Yamaha dealer (Link to Dealer Locator?) will be able to advise you on your specific requirements, the Yamalube Careline product range and carry out your machines servicing requirements.
