ACEM Initiates the Industry’s New Safety Strategy:

The Safe Ride to the Future 2.0

To continue working towards improved safety on all European roads, ACEM (The Motorcycle Industry in Europe) calls for its members, as well as national, local and reginal decision-makers to embrace inclusive motorcycle safety policies through its new strategy, “The safe ride to the future 2.0” .

The new road safety strategy does not only cover advanced safety technology and future connectivity, but also paints a bigger picture going beyond the vehicle itself by addressing topics such as post-licence training and international collaboration between key stakeholders.

In line with the UN SDGs, The Safe Ride to the Future 2.0 reinforces the industry’s pledge to reduce road traffic deaths by at least 50% from 2020 to 2030 and proposes recommendations in 4 areas: high-level policy, human factor, infrastructure and vehicle.

The proposed framework builds upon a long-standing industry commitment to vehicle technology and advocates for a connected, cooperative and automated future transport system.

Furthermore, to tackle the heterogeneity of licence training across the EU and improve road safety from the “human factor” perspective, The Safety Ride to the Future 2.0 elaborates on the benefits of the European Motorcycle Training Quality Label, which aims to increase visibility of the best training programmes available in the EU. ACEM expects to have at least one certified training centre per member state within the coming years, with the ultimate goal to increase the number of riders attending voluntary safety-oriented courses and thus improve safety.

Stefan Pierer, ACEM President, notes: “A combination of all these efforts will be instrumental not just in making Europe’s roads safer, but they will also help reap the considerable benefits that motorcycling brings to society such as, better access jobs and services through affordable mobility, reduced traffic congestion levels as well as sport, leisure and tourism enjoyment.”

Eric de Seynes, President and CEO of Yamaha Motor Europe N.V., affirms : “ACEM’s Safe System approach will open new doors to significantly improve riding safety standards and by this allow to attract a much wider range of users. Yamaha’s way is and has always been to develop customer-centric technologies that enhance riding safety, while maintaining the fun aspect of riding. Our 3-wheel concepts- not only for commuting but also for motorcycle leisure riding - are one example. Our focus on advanced ride control systems and human-machine integration cover another area. Adding to this, the integration of ACEM proposed technologies like C-ITS and Advanced Connectivity will not only improve PTW riding safety and convenience but will also create a totally new dimension and standard. Having said this, Yamaha fully supports ACEM’s Safe System strategy and will strive to incorporate the recommendations in future products. Meanwhile, we encourage all riders to ride safe, for themselves but also for the sake of fellow-riders."
