Tricity concept model
Very different from existing three-wheelers, the Tricity is very compact and light weight, with a narrow track and short wheelbase. This way it will be easier to ride and less intimidating, which is beneficial for newcomers.
At the same time the light weight and fun-to-ride concept may be attractive for current scooter riders and Tricity's configuration can bring a stronger grip feeling and confidence.
Designer Hirotoshi Noguchi talks us through the design background.
“It is a high-quality design developed for the European customer’s sense of style. We wanted to create a smart and refined design that is different from others. And above all, to express how easy to ride this vehicle is.”
Friendly and easy
To achieve this, Hirotoshi and his team created
- Lightweight feeling: “We split up the whole body in two surfaces, by using different colours and different finishing.” (Note: on the sketches these two surfaces are the white and the blue areas).
- Elegance: “The different parts create a beautiful and harmonized flow, crossing over each other, together with the intake ducts throughout the whole vehicle.”
- A design on which you can move freely: “We made it very easy to step on and off, with a flat footboard and no plastic parts in the way. Also the seat shape allows a good freedom of movement.”
The design is up-to-date and fresh. Hirotoshi tells us an interesting detail:
“We fused two elements, a stable feeling and a sense of sportiness, in the styling. The robust fork inside the wheel, like a car, and the fixed fender on top of it, like a two-wheeler, are emphasized visually. Especially while cornering they catch your eye, precisely indicating the rider’s path.”
The concept model is based on the following characteristics:
Engine: 124cc, liquid-cooled 4-stroke with fuel injection and CVT transmission
Weight: approx. 150 kg
Dimensions: L 1905 mm; W 735mm; H 1215mm
License requirement: as a 125cc scooter (A1 or equivalent).
Currently a prototype concept model, Yamaha is investigating mass production of this type of vehicle – which might well become a range of models over time!
