NMAX 125: best value for money in city commuting

NMAX is a young and fresh 125cc scooter, designed for inner-city use. It is compact, agile, easy to ride and very fuel-efficient. And despite its low price, it is built with modern technologies and equipped with ABS! Our development team explains.

“Our target is that anybody who needs a city commuter can enjoy riding it, with confidence.” says project leader Atsushi Taki. Typically Yamaha, riding fun was important and a lot of effort was spent to develop an engine and chassis that provide this.

Compact outside, roomy inside.
Atsushi continues: “NMAX is easy to manoeuvre even in the heavy traffic, thanks to the lightweight and compact body. Yet despite its compact size, it offers a comfortable riding position, whether for small or for large riders.” Indeed there’s a remarkable space for the rider, and the foot area has the possibility to ride feet-forward, like in a car.

Frame design: light and stable
“We developed a high-rigidity and light-weight frame, optimizing the overall parts layout very carefully”, Atsushi explains. “It gives you a good feel for the road and a good stability. And in spite of the compact size, we designed a large storage space under the seat. You can put an XL size fullface helmet plus some extra items there. Or a decent sized bag or backpack!”

Brakes: high spec

With a vehicle dedicated to stop-and-go traffic, Yamaha did not economize on braking. Hydraulic disc brakes (230mm) in front and rear enable a strong and precise brake operation, while the ABS system provides peace of mind.

Modern engine: powerful yet fuel-efficient
The NMAX engine is a large contributor to the riding pleasure. It is the result of deep technical investigations to optimise combustion and reduce internal power losses. The outcome: a fuel injected, 4-valve, liquid-cooled engine that features many lightweight solutions like its forged piston and DiASil cylinder. The offset cylinder layout reduces internal frictions.
And a world premiere in the scooter market is the VVA system (Variable Valve Actuation) in the engine! This system effectively switches between two camshaft profiles.

VVA system
At low rpm, this system uses a camshaft profile aimed at good torque and fuel consumption.
At higher rpm (around 6000) the system switches to a higher-lift cam for better cylinder fill, suitable for those higher rev ranges, with a higher maximum power output. This switch is imperceptible when riding: there is no hesitation or hiccup, the acceleration continues in a linear way. This engine always feels nice and lively!

Fuel consumption
Giovanna Camisa from product planning recollects: “When we started this project, we told our engineers that if we want to become successful with this model, we need to have the lowest fuel consumption possible. But without sacrificing on riding fun.  I’m very happy that they came up with the VVA system and the other technical solutions to do this. Our fuel consumption is measured at an excellent 45.7 km per litre, in the WMTC mode that is used for homologation.”

Design: refined and dynamic, yet robust
“We wanted NMAX to have a unique character, so that you can recognize it at a glance on the street”, tells Kenji Ootonbe who supervised the NMAX design team. “And of course we were also inspired by the typical sporty Yamaha scooter design. At the same time, we did not want it to become delicate or fragile. Therefore we made the silhouette quite upright. And we designed a minimum overhang of the body in front and rear.  This also makes the wide tyres more visible. And the boomerang shape on the tunnel and the protectors on the rear side panels give the NMAX an even more solid, robust feel."

Smart choice

“Solving contradictions was a big challenge in this project” says product planning manager Norihiko Imai. “To be compact, yet at the same time roomy. To have strong acceleration, yet at the same time low fuel consumption. To have an easy and light handling, yet at the same time a good stability at speed. To have a low price, yet at the same time good quality and specifications. Breaking through those contradictions, makes the NMAX such a good vehicle.”

Project Leader Atsushi Taki concludes: “We believe that NMAX is surely a very smart choice in the urban commuting, combining enjoyment, confidence feeling, and utility at the same time.”
