As we are never alone on water, make sure you are informed of the most important practices when riding a WaveRunner. Being a good rider means never compromising the safety of yourself, others or the wildlife around you.
WaveRunner Riding Etiquette
Start with the Basics
Know the local boating laws (drivers’ license, age limit, special registrations, speed limits, restricted areas, etc.).
Do not drink and ride.
Always wear a life vest.
Training will help you get the most out of your WaveRunner and time on the water – research training in your local area to understand how you might benefit from it.
Wear protective gear: wetsuit or drysuit, gloves, footwear and eyewear.
Ensure your lanyard is securely fastened to your person or personal floating device.
Ensure your WaveRunner is prepared for the trip; consider fuel and battery.
Be up to date with the local weather forecast and only ride if safe to do so.
Ensure you have adequate means of communication – VHF Radio or Waterproof telephone.
Ride Responsibly
Research the area you are riding; check for local hazards, prohibited areas, and navigation warnings.
Avoid aggressive maneuvers when riding to minimize the risk of collision and other accidents.
Avoid riding in fog and restricted visibility.
Do not ride at night.
Cruising in company is often more enjoyable and can provide a lifeline should you have safety or mechanical issues.
Maintain a lookout for other crafts and people in the water.
Take early action to avoid collision.
Never apply throttle when anyone is at the stern of the WaveRunner.
Keep away from intake grate when the engine is on.
Come prepared and make sure you have a first-aid kit, grab bag, and anchor.
Personal and third party insurance is recommend for all vessels and compulsory in some areas. Consider where you are riding and how this might affect insurance.
Notify someone ashore if you are going afloat, and when you plan to return.
If you capsize, make sure the engine is turned off. Swim to the stern of your WaveRunner, check the correct direction to right it, and board from the rear.
Respect the Others
WaveRunners are one of the fastest and most maneuverable crafts on the water. If concerned about a collision, pass at safe speed and distance behind other vessels.
Stay on the right when approaching an oncoming craft, and keep clear when overtaking.
Check the local speed limits and adhere to them.
Maintain a safe distance from the shore and all other watercraft.
Be conscious of engine noise and avoid disturbing others.
Respect the Environment
Refuel your WaveRunner and conduct all maintenance when on land to avoid polluting the water.
Respect the wildlife around you and be mindful when riding.
Should you hit an animal, report it immediately to the local wildlife commission.
Wash your PWC carefully after you have used it to prevent the spread of exotic plants to other waters.
Avoid riding in shallow waters.
Never throw litter in the water or on the shore – keep it for the bin.
